There’s so much more to wood management than a name drop about the previous user of the barrel and what the barrel was used for. In fact, at Red Rock Mountain Cooperage, we believe that the best whiskies and wines almost always come from brand new oak barrels as opposed to the second and third used offerings that end up in China.

While there’s usually a cost impact on using new barrels, when the costs of logistics, import duties and taxes are considered, there’s very little difference in cost when comparing a second-use oak barrel to the cost of a brand new oak barrel, crafted right here in Fujian, China.

When that cost difference is broken down per bottle, it’s a single digit percentage point.
